Seminars on District-based Support Model and Parent Education CD-ROM to Support Children with Dyslexia a Roaring Success
On 26 January 2010, Heep Hong Society re-ran the Seminar on District-based Support Model and Parent Education CD-ROM to Support Children with Dyslexia, which was a roaring success and together with the first round held in last December, drew over 700 participants from about 340 units, including educational psychologists, students’ counselors, social workers, teachers, college students of social work, and providers of services in support of dyslexic students.
On the seminars, apart from sharing the project findings, a Parent Education CD-ROM was released at the same time.
The Parent Education CD-ROM focuses on three main areas, namely (1) Chinese learning support; (2) child-rearing support; and (3) parent emotion support. The Chinese learning support series covers word recognition, dictation, reading proficiency, comprehension, writing skills, etc. The child-rearing support series includes homework management, concentration, learning motivation, etc. The parent emotion support series is about emotional management and positive thinking. Student counselors / social workers can make use of the CD-ROM to conduct parent education in a systematic manner, or as a course framework for the formation of children learning or training groups.
In 2006, Heep Hong Society was invited to participate in the "READ & WRITE: A Jockey Club Learning Support Network" by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. Under the project, Heep Hong designed a district-based support model to help dyslexic children and their families through collaboration among organisations in Sham Shui Po, and developed a series of courses for peer professionals. Based on its experience in providing support services for students with dyslexia in Sham Shui Po, Heep Hong has also extended its services to Tin Shui Wai and Tung Chung districts to support dyslexic students and their families from year 2010.
